As part of the Department of Gynecology at Freiburg University Hospital, the Department of Endocrinology and Reproductive Medicine combines clinical patient care with the research environment of a university hospital. Couples facing infertility are cared for in a specialized fertility consultation, where the first priority is a comprehensive workup of the causes in both partners. The range of treatments includes intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF), and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Its own IVF lab is integrated into the department. For men with severe forms of infertility, there is a cooperation with the hospital’s own urology department, through which testicular sperm extraction (TESE) can be performed. This direct interdisciplinary collaboration within the same hospital can shorten diagnostic pathways. Alongside fertility treatment, gynecologic endocrinology is a focus of its own in the department. Hormonal disorders are evaluated in specialty clinics, as are questions about contraception in special medical situations. In addition, gender-affirming hormone therapy for gender incongruence with gender dysphoria is a separate area of treatment in the department.
