Legal situation and cost coverage by country

Germany

Elective egg freezing is allowed, with no legal age limit and no legal maximum storage period. Women pay the costs themselves. The statutory health insurance fund covers freezing only if a medical condition and its treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, put fertility at risk, and only until the 40th birthday.

Switzerland

Elective egg freezing is allowed and is paid for out of pocket. Eggs may be stored for up to 5 years, and for a further 5 years on request. Later, only couples may use them, not single women. The mandatory basic health insurance (Grundversicherung) covers only medically necessary fertility preservation, such as before cancer treatment, until the 40th birthday.

Austria

Without a medical reason, elective egg freezing is prohibited through March 31, 2027. The Austrian Constitutional Court (Verfassungsgerichtshof) has repealed the ban, and it no longer applies as of April 1, 2027. The exact new rules have yet to be determined. Even then, only couples who are married, in a registered partnership, or in a cohabiting partnership may use their own eggs. We therefore list Austrian providers here only starting in April 2027.

I No. 61/2025 (Austria). As of October 2026.

The elective egg freezing guide explains how the process works, who it makes sense for, and what the chances are per egg. For costs, see egg freezing cost.
