About this clinic
Male fertility is the focus of the Androzentrum, a center of expertise of the Kinderwunschzentrum an der Wien in Vienna’s 6th district. It is led by Univ. Prof. Dr. Heinz Strohmer, who treats andrology as a medical field in its own right rather than as a side topic of reproductive medicine. The center describes the diagnostic offering around the semen analysis as unique in its breadth across Austria. Instead of a single standard procedure, the physicians individually choose from various analysis options, which address different men depending on their findings and starting situation. Background: A representative survey commissioned by the center in 2022 (356 participants, Marketagent institute) showed that more women than men know what a semen analysis even is. Prof. Strohmer sees a structural problem in this: Many men only think about their fertility when their wish for a child remains unfulfilled. If the findings are abnormal, several treatment paths are open. The ICSI method, in which a single sperm cell is injected directly into the egg, is part of the repertoire, as is PICSI, in which sperm cells are selected through hyaluronic acid binding in order to favor those with fewer DNA defects. If no sperm cells are present in the ejaculate, testicular biopsy (TESE) is used. In addition, the Androzentrum offers genetic counseling by human geneticist and senior physician Dr. Katharina Rötzer-Londgin and urological consultation appointments with Prim. Doz. Dr. Eugen Plas. Sperm donation is also part of the range of services. For men who want to improve their sperm quality before or during treatment, the SpermBoost concept was developed: a dietary supplement package based on study findings, compiled in collaboration with the Saint Charles Apotheke in Vienna. Ingredients such as ubiquinol, L-arginine, N-acetyl cysteine, and inositol have been studied in clinical trials for their effect on sperm concentration, motility, and morphology. A duration of intake of at least 90 days is recommended, in line with the cycle of spermatogenesis.
