This week

Your baby

  • From 34+0, a birth counts as a late preterm birth. Of the babies born now, about one in ten has respiratory distress syndrome.
  • The baby lies curled up, with its legs drawn up to its chest. Despite the tight space, you still feel it, and your belly changes shape.
  • In boys, the testicles move from the abdomen toward the scrotum.

Your body

  • Sleep on your side. This is best for the baby because the placenta then gets a better blood supply.
  • You need to go to the toilet more often, and walking becomes harder.
  • The baby's movements stay just as frequent until the birth. If they become fewer, call your midwife or the labor ward right away.

What matters now

  • In Germany, maternity protection begins at 34+0. You may only keep working if you expressly declare that you are willing to.
  • The swab for group B streptococcus is due now. In Germany, you usually pay for it yourself. About one in five pregnant women has a positive result.
  • In Austria, the window for the fifth Parent-Child Pass (Eltern-Kind-Pass) examination and the fourth ultrasound begins. It lasts until the 38th week of pregnancy.

Get checked right away: regular contractions before 37+0, your water breaking, bleeding from the vagina, fewer baby movements than usual, severe headache, vision problems, or pain directly below the ribs.
